Common Grain Alliance connects and supports farmers, processors, bakers, and grain artisans to strengthen a vibrant, equitable, and regenerative grain economy in the Mid-Atlantic.

OUR APPROACH

We connect farmers, millers, bakers, maltsters, and allied businesses—especially those historically excluded—to build a more collaborative and resilient regional grain community.

We help farmers access fair and reliable markets, plan production, align pricing, and build profitable long-term operations rooted in regenerative practices.

Through workshops, trainings, speaker series, and meet-ups, we strengthen technical skills, foster shared learning, and deepen relationships across the supply chain.

We develop shared infrastructure, genetics, and information networks, while educating consumers and policymakers about the value of regional grain and advocating for a more just, resilient food system.

Equity isn’t a standalone project. It’s a fundamental part of how we grow the grain economy.

OUR STORY

Founded in 2018 by 13 bakers, millers, and grain farmers in Roseland, VA, the Common Grain Alliance began as a simple effort to bring the Mid-Atlantic grain community together.
The network expanded rapidly and secured major grants—including SARE and NFWF—to support farmer education and publish the Growing Grain Handbook.
We launched the Agricultural Leadership Development Initiative (ALDI) for BIPOC and veteran farmers, reaching nearly 80 members.
We launched the Mid-Atlantic Grain Stand & Grain Share, and completed a regional strategic marketing plan.
Membership grew to 164+; we published our first annual report and began a USDA-funded regional grain supply chain assessment.
